Tiger SOS: Camera trap footage of wild Sumatran tigers E-mail

The Society is hoping to raise the £2 million to build a conservation headquarters for tigers at London Zoo, which would become a European breeding centre for threatened species.

With just 300 left in the wild, the critically endangered Sumatran tiger now faces a situation so dire, that for the first time in its 186-year history, ZSL London Zoo is launching a public appeal for donations.

The numbers of Sumatran tigers have continued to decline due to the combined threats of the loss of habitat, through deforestation, and poachers who hunt them for medicine or to sell their fur, teeth and claws.

In just 70 years, three, possibly even four, subspecies of tiger have become extinct in the wild. Conservationists believe the Sumatran will be the next to die out.
